Some good ideas among a tiresome pile of fringy anecdotes, September 3, 2016

I was a fan of Rosemary Gladstar’s book “Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner’s Guide,” so much so that I gave it a really good review here on Amazon. Bolstered by my good experience with that book, we bought this bigger volume of her recipes without hesitation. I now wish I had given it a little hesitation, because we’ve decided to return it and get our money back.

Amidst the recipes that you’d expect from this renowned herbalist, there is a TON of side columns, stories, and interrupting anecdotes cluttering up the pages. These stories rarely have much helpful to say about the herb or remedy being discussed; rather, they are, by and large, somewhat eye-roll inducing references to ley lines, fairies, or people that she knows. While some of the stories of herbalists she knew ended up being interesting, I mostly found them distracting. The title of a book like this makes me think it should be dedicated to the study and use of plants, with an emphasis on their properties and recipes. And while they’re in the book, it really seems more of a focus on the author’s life. A more truthful title, in my opinion, would have been something like, “Rosemary Gladstar Talks About Her Mystical Experiences; Also Here’s Some Tea Recipes.”

If you’re looking for a book to help you learn the building blocks of herbal medicine, I recommend her other title that I mentioned above–I found that one to be much more clearly written, focused and useful. Her wheat-berries of good herbal wisdom are totally lost in the big heap of chaff that this book ended up being.

I have just started learning about herbalism and homeopathic remedies. This book is well written and provides very easy to follow recipes for a wide range of items from tinctures, to face cleaner, to everyday teas for optimum health. I have enjoyed reading ever page and learned a great deal about how to improve my nervous system for better living. I like that the author gives you a base recipe and encourages you to experiment to find the perfect combination for you. It is written in a positive, sharing and encouraging manner.

I would warn you that in order to make all the different items you would need a HUGE pantry full of ingredients. There is a picture in the book on page 22 of the book that shows Rosemary in a room with a wall lined full of mason jars of herbs, I pretty much feel like that is what you need to be able to make all these things. I have slowly started building my stock and I think I will need an addition on my house by the time I am through. That being said I think that is probably the case for most people who get into herbalism and it will be well worth it to avoid a bunch of trips to the doctor and pharmacy bills.
