My rheumatologist diagnosed me with fibromyalgia, and I dismissed her outright, thinking, “You’re just trying to get rid of me by giving me a bogus hypochondriac label.” Well, I was wrong and I apologize to the fibro community. I definitely have every symptom the people in this book describe. It was like reading my everyday life spelled out on paper. It opened my eyes a lot to the fact that this is a very real thing, and not only do I have it, but there’s hope for all of us. I consider the book itself to be a support tool, and it inspired me to go and fine out more about fibromyalgia. The best part is that I FINALLY was able to show my family how there ARE other people in the world who are going through the same thing I am. It hit them really hard, and they said, “Wow, we had no idea you had it that bad.” So, in short – thanks, Guide to Understanding the Journey, for changing my life!

As someone who is living with this syndrome I found this book to be very accurate and helpful. To know that others feel and experience the things you do is somehow validating. Fibromyalgia is not terminal, is invisible and not at all understood by those who have not experienced it first hand. I was very glad that the frequent occurrence of nausea was mentioned as I deal with this almost daily and not all books include this. Nothing can give us our life back, nor make us feel less isolated by the lack of understanding by others but to know there are those that share what you do does help. Good job Shelly.

Finally a Book on Fibromyalgia that does NOT Disappoint, March 5, 2013

I loved it! Shelly Bolton’s “Fibromyalgia: A Guide to Understanding the Journey” was an illuminating read about a subject some are lucky enough to know nothing about. What sets this book apart is Shelly’s unique perspective. As a sufferer herself, her “down in the trenches” firsthand knowledge lends her book a credibility that goes way beyond the sources she cites to back her narrative. What I especially liked about this book is that it delivers everything the author promises in a simple, yet very effective prose. I had no trouble navigating the complex medical aspects of the disease as every symptom and medical term was thoroughly explored and explained with short, easy to digest paragraphs that are filled with essential information needed to unmask this elusive monster.

The personal anecdotes, masterfully spread throughout, lighten the darker aspects of the book, adding a little humor to a subject that is quite frightening. Her message of hope for those who must cope with fibromyalgia is uplifting, and the stories of other “fibromites” included at the end are particularly helpful when it comes to humanizing the disease. The “one-stop-shopping” list of resources she takes the time to share in her Epilogue is a wonderful bonus. Whether you suffer from fibromyalgia, think you suffer from it, or know someone that suffers from it, if you truly want to get the inside scoop, this book is a MUST read! With 1 in every 50 Americans (80-90% female) now getting this incurable disorder, “Fibromyalgia: A Guide to Understanding the Journey” is also highly recommended to anyone who simply wants to get educated by someone whose expertise comes from the heartfelt journey she’s taken while combating the disease at a very personal level. The information you’ll get from this book will not disappoint.
